A Guide to Sneaker Customization

$
0
0
Anyone with sneaker game knows that exclusivity is everything but with the increase in internet shopping and the rise of eBay reselling it can be hard for your sneakers to stand out in the crowd. This is perhaps why the popularity of sneaker customization has grown exponentially in recent years.

Below we'll take you through our step by step guide on how to customize your sneakers using Angelus and Fiebing paints and dyes. Alternatively if you feel your not up to challenge why not get a professional to do it for you? There are many sneakers customizer in Glasgow, one our our favourites is GlasgowRob.

Step 1 - Materials:
The most important part of customization is having the right products, first of all work out what material your customizing, we stock leather paint, dye and suede dye from brands such as Angelus and Fiebing's. Optional extras to help you get the desired effect are cotton wool balls, paintbrushes or airbrush (if available), masking tape to avoid seepage, a finisher and something to dry such as a hair dryer. Plastic gloves and plenty of spare newspaper will also come in handy.

Step 2 - Prep:
Like most things the prep is an essential part for those looking to do a good job. For a professional effect that won't fade after a couple of wears be sure to strip the original colours so that your applied colour will bond properly with the underlying materials. Any acetone will do the job (we stock both Fiebing's and Angelus) simply soak it in a cotton ball and rub the coating off the leather. You should go through a lot of cotton balls and the coating may leave a paste like residue which is normal. The original material should turn grey and should leave the layer smooth, this make take up to 30-40 minutes but is worth it if you want a solid effect.

Step 3 - Masking:
We would also advise, if your only painting certain parts, to mask off all the areas you don't want to get paint on using cellotape or masking tape. Use a sharp knife to cut along the edges to get clean lines.

Step 4 - Mixing:
We stock a massive collection of colours in both leather and suede dye however feel free to mix the colours if your after a shade in particular.

Step 5 - Paint/Dye:
Once your shoe is masked off and you have the perfect colour get a paint brush and start painting. If using leather paint and painting a small area make sure to use a small fine brush and when dyeing suede be sure to use a larger stiffer brush. A steady hand and patience is advised for this step.

Step 6 - Finishing:
Once you've painted them make sure to dry them, we find a hair dryer on a medium heat and blow works well or simple leave in a well ventilated room overnight. For a super professional look use either a matte, satin, regular or gloss finisher to achieve the desired look.

How to Wear - Edwin Selvedge

Japanese imprint Edwin having been making premium denim for generations including a range of the most venerated denim, Selvedge. We stock several variations of the Selvedge in a range of cuts from regular to tapered to slim.

For the uninitiated Selvage is made using a loom that dispenses with modernized techniques to produce a classic artisan finish. Selvedge is often characterized by a denser weave that is tighter than their non-selvedge cousins. Selvedge by it's nature is finely bound at the edges and does not fray or unravel at the edges as regular denim often does. The “self-edge” is what gives the various distinct colours (red, white, rainbow), a practice fabric mills follow to differentiate between fabrics.

Below we look at how to style the various Edwin Selvedge:

White listed Selvedge is finished off with a White stitched turnup and is available in ED-55, ED-71 and ED-80. White listed selvedge is the most understated selvedge so we have teamed it up with Edwin's Marvin Tee in a muted colour palette of navy/white.

Red Listed selvedge is one of the most popular selvedge variations we stock and looks good with almost anything. We have teamed it with Edwin's pocket tee in grey allowing the Selvedge to hold the focus. Available in ED-35, ED-39, ED-55, ED-80 and Nashville.

The boldest and one of  our favorite is Rainbow Selvedge. The bright colours play well with bold patterns so we have teamed it Edwin's checked Labour Shirt. Rainbow selvedge is available in the following cuts: ED-47, ED-55 and ED-80.

Our first musical offering for July features the controversial video from pop provocateur Rihanna, grime pioneer Skepta's track Back Then as well Action Bronson's latest offering Voodoo.

Rihanna - "Bitch Better Have My Money"
Pop provocateur Rihanna returns with the controversial video for her new track "Bitch Better Have Money". The song, produced in association with Kayne West and Travi$ Scott, was released back in March and is due to feature on her forthcoming eighth album. The track and video were inspired by Rihanna's dealing with an accountant who mishandled her finances back in 2009 and is seemingly a cathartic expression for the Barbadian songstress. Love or hate the divisive video there is no denying Rihanna's ability to shock and the video is worth checking out either way:

Skepta - Back Then
Grime pioneer Skepta dropped an exclusive new track on Rinse FM last Tuesday. Titled "Back Then" the track features Skepta reflecting on his success over the beat of Mike Jone's hit "Still Tripping". Check out the track on Hypebeast here

Action Bronson - Voodoo
Action Bronson has teamed up with LA-based producer The Alchemist  on new track "Voodoo" featuring Bronson's energetic lyrics over a distinctly The Alchemist instrumental. Listen to the track here.

Going Out - T in The Park - Essentials

Today sees the start of Scotland's biggest musical festival with T in The Park kicking off at it's new location of Strathallan Castle. In this post we look at the essentials you'll need to you pack smart this T in the Park 2015:
In over 20 years of T in The Park I don't recall one fully dry weekend and after a quick look on BBC Weather it doesn't look like this weekend will be breaking the mold. So make sure you bring a waterproof so you can enjoy yourself no matter what the weather brings. While a lot of modern jackets are water repellent for solid protection from the rain we suggest the following brands whose jackets are specifically designed for the outdoors and elements: Poler Outdoor Stuff, Patagonia, K-Way and Didriksons. All these brands are available in store and online at Fat Buddha Store.

Anyone who's walked the arduous walk from the car park to the camping site while carrying a crate, a tent and all their other supplies will realse the benefit of a sturdy bag. We stock a vast and varied variety with sturdier options such as Eastpak or Obey to the stylish numbers from Sandqvist and Herschel Supply Co which are more suited to day trippers. Shop our full range of backpacks and bags in store and online here.

Really show of your style credentials at the TITP with the Carhartt Camping Chair. Covered in a class camo print the chair easily folds away into a small bag for portability and is easily assembled making them perfect for after you've had a few drinks.

Also from Carhartt is this foldable BBQ. Folding away into a small carry bag and again easily assenbled this BBQ allows you to eat delicious warm food which is sorely needed during a weekend of camping.

The Poler 10" cast iron dutch oven comes pre-seasoned and ready to use straight out of the box. Built to last, and to make apple crisp. The perfect travel companion this summer. Please note that this owen is slightly heavier so you might want to take this if you are driving up.

Make sure you protect your price kicks from the mud with a shoe protector. We offer several different options from classic Crep Protect to the 'Imbox Footwear Protection Shoe Care' which is a stand alone machine which will waterproof your shoes for up to three months. They say prevention is better than cure but if forget to use a protector on your shoes fear not you can always use shoe cleaner from industry leader Jason Markk.

No camping or festival trip should be undertaken without a quality pair of sunglasses. Everyone looks better with a pair of sunglasses and they can certainly help cover up the fatigue of a long weekend. Shop our full range of sunglasses online here and be careful not to lose them (it always happens).
Other essentials (sadly not available at Fat Buddha Store) are food, suncream, wellies, alcohol, baby wipes (extremely handy after rain) and a tent. Happy camping!

Converse - Spring/Summer 2015

Converse have dropped four new editions of their classic styles for Spring/Summer 2015. Classic shapes such as the Chuck Taylor OX and 70s Hi Boot have returned in an array of new materials and colour options.

The latest drop sees three new variations of Converse's classic Chuck Taylor 70s Ox in Imperial blue canvas along with black and white leather editions. These models may look strikingly similar to their original 1970s counterparts but true sneaker aficionados will notice a few key modifications such as added cushioning, a studier toebox and higher rubber foxing along the sole unit. The shoes have not dispensed however with classic detailing such as the iconic license plate on the heel, defined stitching and signature vulcanised sole. An upgrade is also evidenced in the use of materials with the imperial blue option being constructed from a premium canvas while the other models feature fine leather uppers.

The other new shoe, the Chuck Taylor 70s Hi, also gets the same treatment with higher rubber foxing, a lot more cushioning on the footbed and a more defined toe box. Again this updated edition retains all the classic Converse features with its signature license plate to the heel and it's pronounced stitching. An icy grey colourway of Wild Dove sit atop an off white midsole with complimentary white laces.

While retaining the identity of their 70s originals true sneaker fans should enjoy the subtle upgrades on Converse's classic models. Check out the new models below, all available in store and online at Fat Buddha Store.

Good news for Architecture aficionados with two beacons of design and architecture, The Architectural Review and Icon Magazine, dropping new issues at Fat Buddha Store this week.

First we have the August issue of design magazine ICON which first looks at a mini-history of world fairs and assesses their impact on the zeitgeist of international design. The issue also looks at OMA's nuanced design of Fondazione Prada fashion institute and compares it with the more brazen Frank Gehry's Foundation Louis Vuitton which opened in Paris last year. Also in this issue is Jamie Hayon’s Game On collection which brings sports together with furniture, Make’s groundscraper lands at Broadgate, the Vienna Biennale and its ideas for change, new pieces from in-demand studio Moving Mountains, Peter Zumthor mentors Gloria Maria Cabral, Piet Hein Eek’s revamp of the holiday home, design polymath Hanna-Kaarina Heikkilä, and praise for We Made That’s socially-driven practice.

The July issue of Architectural Review also landed this week with articles on their take on modern design and architecture with a specific focus on the House as an architectural statement.

Since 1896, Architectural Review has been showcasing the evolution of the craft and its main associates for like minded people to become inspired and motivated by others with a shared interest. To this day, the review still stands as one of the most popular and relevant magazines in its sector.

Design magazine Icon is devoted to international design, archiecture and culture. Filled with pages of opinion, review, news and features.
